Return to Paradise A Leaving Paradise Novel Simone Elkeles Books
Appropriate for 12 yrs & up. Some mature themes but dealt with pretty realistically and in a positive way. Great sequel- loved the characters as much as I did in the first one. A few things kind of fantastical and wrapped up almost too easily for how issues were dealt with throughout the rest of the book. But I’m really glad I hunted this down immediately after reading the first one.Tags : Amazon.com: Return to Paradise (A Leaving Paradise Novel) (9780738718682): Simone Elkeles: Books,Simone Elkeles,Return to Paradise (A Leaving Paradise Novel),Flux,0738718688,JUV026000,Romance - General,Social Themes - Emotions & Feelings,Drunk driving,Drunk driving;Fiction.,Interpersonal relations,Interpersonal relations;Fiction.,People with disabilities,People with disabilities;Fiction.,Secrets,Literature & Fiction,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Children's Teenage fiction: General fiction,Fiction,JUVENILE,JUVENILE FICTION General,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile Grades 7-9 Ages 12-14,Love & Romance,Monograph Series, any,Romance & relationships stories (Children's Teenage),TEEN'S FICTION ROMANCE,United States,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance Contemporary,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes Emotions & Feelings,Young Adult Fiction,Young Adult FictionSocial Themes - Emotions & Feelings, young adult; teen fiction; fiction; teen; teenager; angst; drama; romance; relationships; simone elkeles,JUVENILE FICTION General,Love & Romance,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance Contemporary,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes Emotions & Feelings,Young Adult FictionSocial Themes - Emotions & Feelings,Young Adult Fiction,Fiction,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Children's Teenage fiction: General fiction,Romance & relationships stories (Children's Teenage)
Return to Paradise A Leaving Paradise Novel Simone Elkeles Books Reviews
A lot of "will they be together or won't they be together" was the theme of this book, which made for insufficient plot advancement, lots of wheel spinning, and eventually frustration. Characters became stale and began acting out of norm in order to justify their irrational, contradictory behavior. A disappointing follow up novel up novel that felt poorly plotted and poorly executed. 2.75 stars
I loved "Leaving Paradise" and it remains on my favorites list but the sequel fell short for me. It was nice getting some closure with Maggie and Caleb but in the end I was still left wanting for some reason. Funny that I've disliked the author's use of Epilogues in her other series but actually would have appreciated one at the end of this novel. Besides my disappointment with the ending, my main issue is that I found a lot of the actions and dialogue within the novel confusing and illogical. --Mild spoilery ahead-- One paragraph Maggie's thoughts would be about getting closure with Caleb and that they don't trust or respect each other and the next paragraph she is asking Caleb about their future. I felt like I was missing something. This isn't my first book that I've felt like paragraphs were missing so I guess that's a possibility. I also found the interactions with Caleb's ex-best friend Brian and ex-girlfriend Kendra who both lied and cheated on him confusing, unlikely and unnecessary. Again, one paragraph Caleb is worried that Maggie will see Kendra hugging him and the next paragraph Kendra is showing up at his house and staying until all hours of the night. What am I missing and what on earth do they have to talk about? Why would Caleb want to speak to Brian or Kendra ever again, let alone hang out with them and hurt Maggie further? These are just a few examples of things that didn't add up for me but if you've read the first book of the series and loved it as much as I did, I doubt you'll be able to resist reading this one in spite of my mild disappointment.
As soon as I finished Leaving Paradise, I was anxious to read Return to Paradise. This is a story of growth, sacrifice, and acceptance. One event and one choice can change the trajectory of so many lives. Caleb made a choice to protect the one person he always had protected without foreseeing the consequences. A year later he is faced with those consequences. One being Maggie his neighbor who was forever injured on the night of the accident that changed everything. Unable to deal with the consequences of his choice, Caleb leaves Paradise and Maggie behind. Fate gives them a second chance. They fight, but ultimately truth and love have the ultimate say. The question is, is it too late to make up for every ill-advised choice.
The supporting characters emphasized this plot. I wish Caleb's ex-girlfriend would have been mentioned, but ignored. The plots with her do not add to the overall story and she seems contrived.
I'm a huge Simone Elkeles fan. HUGE! So, I was extremely excited for Return to Paradise, because let's face it, Leaving Paradise really left us hanging. I was so anxious to read what was going to happen with Caleb and Maggie! I knew it wouldn't be easy for them. No, Elkeles is the queen of drama! Nothing is ever easy for her characters. Even knowing that this book left me the tiniest bit disappointed.
Return to Paradise picks up 8 months after the first book. Caleb and Maggie are thrown together by extenuating circumstances and forced to spend a month together on the road discussing their accident with other teens. Maggie and Caleb were the same Maggie and Caleb as in the first book. Always at odds with each other. Always having conflicting emotions. I was rooting for them the entire time! I kept thinking 'It's not that hard!! Just try!' Because they made things much harder than they had to be. That's Simone genius, though, she creates such excellent drama! It makes you want to shake the characters!
The reason I rated this book 3.5 stars instead of the 5 that Elkeles books usually get is that it all felt very repetitive. It felt like I had read it all before. The conflicts all felt very similar to her other books. That's not to say that I won't be reading everything she writes in the future, because have no doubt that I will! She the queen of teen drama and I can't get enough!
