SHADOW BLUELINK Book 1 edition by Maureen A Miller Romance eBooks Reviews
Some books just stay with you even when they are closed. Shadow by Maureen A. Miller is this type of book. It has all of the characteristics I expect of a book from author – great story line, well developed characters, and a great balance of romance and suspense. Shadow had me engaged from the first page and looking over my shoulder until the very end. And yes, I mean literally. I was out one night when it was dark and wondered if the Shadow was out there somewhere. I love it when books come alive and affect me even when I am not reading them!
In Shadow we meet Sophie who is trying like crazy to move on with her life after her boss up and left the counseling firm she worked. While dealing with unemployment she also has a stalker who she has nicknamed The Shadow that follows here around all the time. Even when she moves to London! She is fiesty and strong and everything you want in a heroine. The hero of the story, Glenn, is not at all what I expected after my first impression of him. He is so broken and still so very kind and thoughtful. His story brought tears to my eyes and my heart ached for him. All I could think about was how good it is that he has Sophie in his life.
Sophie and Glenn are an unlikely pair, which I loved. The chemistry was pretty hot between them and when they weren’t solving crimes I loved getting lost in their intimacy. Despite the circumstances under which they met, their romance was very sweet and makes you realize that you never know where you will find your true love.
I love supporting characters in stories because many times they steal the scene. Sam was that character in Shadow that did it for me. He is witty, protective and sweet. He was that friend to Sophie in London that she needed when she had no one else. Loved him!
Miller lets the reader figure out the clues as to what happened to Sophie’s boss along with the characters and it’s fun to be in a mystery like that. Shadow is unique, intriguing, and moves at a quick pace. If you are looking for a romantic suspense that will pull you in from the beginning, give you the chills, get your pulse racing and your heart bursting with joy, I suggest you give Shadow a try.
I really enjoyed this novel, which is a credit to the author. There are many plots like this one - a woman being followed by a mysterious man - but the way this author managed to imbue a little extra something - suspense, mystery - into the mix was very skillful.
I liked the characters - Sophie was not an over-the-top gung-ho heroine, intent on "looking after herself" to the point where I could get totally fed up with her nonsense. This heroine is a woman who is completely believable in her role. "Shadow" is a strong character, ill-advised in some areas but comes through at the right time. The emphasis on the two main characters and the importance of the secondary characters (putting only four people into the immediate mix) made the novel very easy to read. The entrance of the hidden fifth came at just the right time, bringing the ending to a very satisfying finish.
An absorbing read, so much so that I am about to buy the second in the series )
Shadow is Maureen Miller’s newest romantic suspense novel, and the last part of the book kept me on the edge of my seat with heart-pounding suspense! Sophie is a determined young woman rebuilding her life after her boss, Nathan Berthard, disappears without a trace with thousands of dollars of clients’ and partners’ money. I enjoyed how the book slowly built up in intensity as the reader and Sophie experienced cryptic and unsettling encounters with the man Sophie referred to as the Shadow. The Shadow is determined to find Nathan and believing Sophie knows his whereabouts, relentlessly pursues her, simply asking “Where is Nathan Berthard?” during each encounter. Even though Sophie is frightened by these encounters at first, the Shadow never hurts her or makes any threats, he just wants to find Nathan Berthard. After moving to London for a job offer, Sophie thinks her Shadow is gone, but when she is hit by a cab and ends up in the hospital, her Shadow watches over her, protecting her and keeping her safe. As they spend more time together, Sophie gets to know Glenn and helps him deal with an overwhelming grief and trauma for which he holds Nathan Berthard responsible and needs to find answers. Suspense builds as they dig deeper into client records and discover how evil Nathan really is and why he’s after Sophie. I really liked the epilogue, and also the discovery that this is the first of a planned three book series featuring employees of Blue-Link, a global risk management company. The attention to detail immersed me completely in Sophie’s world, and my heart ached for Glenn, tears streaming down my face as he told his story. Sophie was a balm to his tortured soul and I loved them together. I have read all of Maureen Miller’s books and I one-clicked this book not even knowing what it was about, just that it was a new romantic suspense by one of my most favorite authors, and I was not disappointed. I can’t wait for Mist, the next book in the series!
Shadow is book 1 of the Blue Link series. Sophie's boss runs off with all the company money including hers. Then she notices a man is stalking her. She takes a job in London to get away but the man follows her. This was sort of a weird story; not too suspenseful. There was little sex and the romance seemed to be rushed. It is a stand alone story.
Interesting storyline, personable characters, but suspense is overshadowed by school girl musings. -- endless vocalizations of how darkly handsome, how muscular, how full his lips, etc etc etc. The locale change could have been more developed and incorporated with less mushy slush-filler. Good read for Harlequin readers & day dreamers.
