It’s incredibly difficult for teenagers to deal with life-altering situations, especially when the aftermath of those particular incidences leave them feeling lost, confused, and ultimately alone despite the number of people in their lives who try to help them, only to be pushed away because the emotions are too overwhelming…too raw…too unpredictable. This maelstrom of emotions is what settles in Camellia Hale’s soul, darkening her days and preventing any kind of clarity as to how to move on with her life now that it’s imploded and fractured in heartbreakingly devastating ways. The picture perfect life that Camellia once had, including friends, passions, and a long-term boyfriend now seem inconsequential; everything no longer has meaning, and while Camellia is not supposed to find comfort and solace in someone who has authority over her due to the fact that he is both her teacher and her coach, it’s clear that David Andrews becomes Camellia’s security…her guiding light amidst the darkness…the one who helps her find other ways to cope with her pain…with her loss…with her burdens and demons that seem to dominate her psyche in tragically unhealthy ways.
David Andrews is a game changer for Camellia; he allows her to breathe again…to not want to completely vanish from her life, but their relationship, at least where it’s headed and in terms of society’s perception, is forbidden and taboo; it’s a bond that no one, besides themselves, will understand, and while they both are well aware of the risks…of the difficulties that will follow them…of the repercussions that could destroy their lives even more than they already are, David and Camellia refuse to surrender to public opinion…refuse to turn their backs on the one person who makes them feel more alive than they’ve ever felt before, and to them, those feelings will get see them through the chaos and heartbreak that is bound to come once their secrets are revealed.
The emotional torment that Camellia has felt since tragedy rocked every facet of her life resonates from the pages of Sweet Lucidity and E.K. Blair illustrates exactly what those feelings can do to a person who has spent her entire life following one course…one path who is then forced on a new journey - one that doesn’t make sense or seem to have any value. Readers can’t help but feel for Camellia and worry that her decisions and actions aren’t ones that she would make given a clear mind and a healed heart. But it’s also difficult to truly understand where/why people find solace, and as Camellia’s entire world plummets into darkness, her one guiding light is a man she’s not supposed to want or need, but that doesn’t stop her from doing so because she’d rather have him and be deemed wrong or immoral than be without him and suffer even more misery than she already does.
Anytime I read a forbidden romance story, especially one that involves a teacher and one of his/her students, I’m always intrigued by how the romance between them begins…I want to be able to understand all of the nuances behind their choices…the reasons the risk is worth it…the inevitably of the truth coming out…And, ultimately, the resolve to allow this ‘taboo’ relationship to continue despite society’s persecution of it.
What I enjoy most about E.K. Blair and her storytelling is that she isn’t afraid to think/write outside the box regardless of the ill reception her stories may receive. There is a lot about life and living that does not adhere to society’s dictates and to disregard that idea is incredibly close-minded. Life is messy and it’s difficult and it never follows a singular course, and while most people would rather wear their rose-colored glasses and strive to only see the good life offers, there’s a lot that people will find reprehensible but until they’ve looked at it from every angle and truly understand the reasons behind the actions, judgment should not be rendered, even for those things deemed taboo and forbidden.

Secret Lucidity A Forbidden Student/Teacher Romance StandAlone edition by EK Blair AW Editing Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Any person looking at the blurb knows the romance within the story is forbidden. The student/teacher relationship which Cam and David has crosses so many boundaries. Reading this story reminded me that there are moments in time, which defines us. Some are good and bring us utter joy and some are bad and brings nothing but tragedy. I felt for Cam... Time and time again.... I felt her pain. Her pain cut her physically as well as emotional. She didn't know how to deal with the changes in her life and the people, who were supposed to be there as friends or family, didn't know how to deal. I always say that when you change sometimes the people around you change with it. The sub characters within the story didn't understand Cam's pain even though it was so visible. I'm glad, even though it was absolutely forbidden, that Cam had David. He was her person. No question.
There were so many amazing quotes throughout the story. The feels were just there. I love the forbidden. I love reading something that makes society take a step back. With this story, which is definitely forbidden, the reader would take more than just a few steps back. The reader will question what they read. The reader will question what it truly means to love unconditionally when society says it is all so wrong.
Forbidden romances are the best to read because they are enticing and exciting; its like you are living on the edge and may not be able to come back from whatever you are about to do . It gives you this high feeling but it’s also seductive and tempting. That is what makes forbidden romances my favorite and this story has taboo and forbidden all over it. This is a student / teacher story but it is so much more than that.
In "Secret Lucidity," EK Blair took the age old story of a forbidden student/ teacher romance and then put her own special spin with twist on it. This is a story of deep loss, grief, terrible pain and a forbidden tragic love story. Emphasis on the tragic and forbidden. I do not want to give too much of the story away but what I will say is that Camellia is a young girl in high school who had it all- she had a boyfriend who she cared about, was going into her senior year, was the top swimmer on her swimming team and life was good for her…until everything crashed and burned. She was left floundering , rudderless and aimless. Cam was in tremendous pain and didn’t know how to stop this pain. Into the picture comes David, the new English teacher and swimming coach. He left his past behind to try and start anew. He meets Cam and suddenly he knows he has to stay away from this beautiful girl with the sad eyes. He is older than her by 14 years but he knows if he lets it happen, those 14 years wont matter. Only thing is, David can see what others cant. How bad Cam is struggling—Can he let her wither away or can he be the person who reaches out and drags her back in? At what risk to him?
I seriously didn’t know what I was getting into when reading this story but OMG the emotions are raw, gritty, emotional, deep… I knew David and Cam were going to own me by the time this story ended and oh yes, they did. This isn’t a story that will leave you with warm fuzzies but it will make you think and it will have you falling in love with David many times over. This book was a roller-coaster ride full of emotions that once you get on, you better hang on for the full ride. I felt so bad for Cam. She and David made sense even though to many they probably didn’t. My heart ached and my tissue box got a work out when I read this story. I loved it but if I had anything that I wished could be changed then I would say--- I do wish the story showed what happened to them instead of ending as it did. When reading the book, you will understand. Overall this is one fantastic read and I look forward to reading what Ms. Blair has next.
My Rating 4.5 stars *****
